Our Story
hey there!
My name is Emilia and I started The Shed back in the spring of 2013 in the garage of our very small first home. This big white barn and sprawling wood fences would come many years and tears later. I have always loved creating and forever felt the need to stay busy. While my husband was off with his hobbies, I started filling my free time with jewelry making, sewing, building, painting, decorating and anything else I could get my hands on. I soon found markets and fell in love. We began attending every market within a few hours away, almost weekly. Over the years the shine of markets became dull and we became burnt out on being away and traveling so often. It's always surprised me how God can feel the weight of your heart in moments and know just what you need, however unexpected it may be. And poof, we found out we were expecting our first child. Bryce and I had never planned to have children but you know, “if you want to make God laugh...”. We still loved The Shed but the idea of The Shed needed to change into something a little more “at home”. After our sparkly eyed little Maxi was born, I had this future vision for our family and the business. I had this idea in my head of someday, very far away, that I would have a home, with a store on the property, with all the animals I could ever want and my children would run around barefoot and finger paint and collect feathers and find what they loved to do just as I had. I would be able to stay busy and work but I would get to share that with my kids as I watched them grow. So the search began but not in any real hurry. We honestly didn't know what we were looking for and the most of it was we couldn't afford much. I wanted to buy every property we looked at but Bryce was more sensible. A couple years into the search, Bryce sent me the listing for this not so appealing property with awful listing photos and the ugliest pile of barns I had ever seen. I said no way but we drove out the Spencerville anyway. I'm pretty sure my heart exploded and I heard bells in my head ringing when we got there. There it was, our new home. The property had become near feral sitting empty for so many years, a million snakes, spiders as big as rats, the barns needed work and a couple years later we bulldozed the old house but I am very thankful to every “NO” I heard along the way. With the help of family and friends and all of our savings we moved The Shed into the biggest and newly freshened up barn on the property. Since 2016 we have bought back all the surround barns that had been sold to other neighbors and picked away on the property piece by piece. We have two horses, three goats, five cats, seven dogs, four bunnies, chickens and ducks. My two daughters run around barefoot and collect feathers and finger paint. My husband builds fences and puts in the animals at night and I get to keep busy with the best team of girls who have become my best friends. To say I am grateful to our family, customers, followers and neighbors for all the help and support over the years would be grossly inaccurate. With all the love and thankfulness in my heart we would not be here without you. Thank you for letting us do what we love and be apart of your home.
